Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Choose the right Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) for the job, including conducting a risk assessment to ensure safety.
  • Understand and follow the safety requirements outlined in the Workplace Safety and Health Act and the Code of Practice for Working Safely at Height when working with MEWPs.
  • Perform pre-start inspections to ensure the equipment is safe and ready for use.
  • Identify the key factors that affect the stability of the MEWP during operation.
  • Recognize common hazards that can occur while traveling, setting up, operating, and parking the MEWP, and know how to apply control measures to reduce these risks.
  • Conduct workplace inspections to ensure that the environment is safe for using MEWPs.
  • Understand the function of all the controls on the MEWP, including emergency controls and procedures for handling emergencies.
  • Select and use the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) based on the risk assessment, the specific task, worksite conditions, and environmental factors, following the manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Operate the MEWP safely, minimizing risks and ensuring a safe work environment.

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for workers who are required to use and operate a Boom Lift (a type of MEWP) as part of their work. It will equip them with the knowledge and skills to perform these tasks safely and effectively.

Assessments

To successfully complete the course, participants need to pass:

  • Written Assessment:

    • Duration: 45 minutes
    • Format: 30 multiple-choice questions
    • Passing Score: 80%
  • Practical Assessment:

    • Duration: 30 minutes
    • Evaluation: Competent/Not Yet Competent
