Course Overview

Previously known as the Safety Orientation Course – Metalworking, this course is a mandatory Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) training for all workers in the metalworking industry. Before beginning work, all metalworking workers must complete this training to ensure they understand key safety protocols.


Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand and identify your role and responsibilities in the metalworking industry.
  • Follow and implement safe work procedures specific to the metalworking environment.
  • Know how to respond effectively to fire emergencies in the workplace.

Who Should Attend?

This course is for workers in the metalworking industry, particularly those involved in manufacturing, fabricating metal products, machinery, and related work. It's essential for anyone working in factories that produce or handle metals.


Pre-requisites

To attend this course, you should:

  • Be employed as manual labor in a factory engaged in manufacturing basic metals, fabricated metal products, machinery, or electrical machinery.
  • Be able to understand and communicate in English at a proficiency level equivalent to Employability Skills (ES) level 2 (listening, reading, speaking, and writing).
  • Be able to work with numbers at an ES level 2 proficiency or higher.

Course Outline

Part 1: Identify Your Role and Responsibilities in Metalworking

  • Understand your legal obligations under Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) requirements.
  • Learn about your rights and responsibilities as outlined in WSH legislation and the Employment Act.
  • Understand your rights under the Workplace Injury Compensation Act.

Part 2: Follow Safe Work Procedures in Metalworking

  • Recognize safety signs commonly found in metalworking environments.
  • Identify typical workplace hazards and the risk control measures required to prevent them.
  • Follow Permit-to-Work (PTW) procedures to ensure safe work practices.
  • Wear the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) as per company guidelines.

Part 3: Respond to Fire Emergencies

  • Understand and follow fire evacuation procedures based on specific incident scenarios.
  • Learn which fire extinguishers to use for different types of fires.
  • Apply the correct firefighting techniques as per your organization’s fire safety procedures.

Assessments

To successfully complete the course, you will need to pass:

  • Written Assessment:

    • Duration: 1 hour
    • Format: 40 multiple-choice questions (MCQs)
    • Passing Score: 60%
  • Practical Performance:

    • Duration: 15 minutes
    • Evaluation: Competent/Not Yet Competent

This course ensures that metalworking workers have the necessary knowledge to work safely and responsibly. By understanding your roles and responsibilities, following safe work procedures, and knowing how to respond in emergencies, you’ll be better prepared to contribute to a safe working environment.
