Course Overview

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Safely and efficiently carry out lifting operations.
  • Implement legislative requirements to create a safe working environment.
  • Investigate crane accidents and put in place preventive measures to avoid future incidents.

Who Should Attend?

This course is mandatory for individuals assigned to supervise lifting operations involving a mobile crane, tower crane, or any other type of crane at the workplace.

Pre-requisites

To enroll in this course, you must:

  • Be 21 years old or older.
  • Have completed the WSQ Perform Rigger and Signalman Tasks course.
  • Have at least 3 months of relevant experience in lifting operations (this must be supported by a Company/Individual Application Letter outlining your experience).
  • Be medically fit and have proficiency in:
    • English: Listening, speaking, reading, and writing at a proficiency level equivalent to Employability Skills (ES) Level 4.
    • Numeracy: Able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ES Level 4.

Note: Participants are advised to have WPLN Level 4 or higher to ensure they can fully understand and engage with the course content.


Course Outline

CE 1: Prepare to Supervise Safe Lifting Operations

  • Ensure compliance with Risk Assessments.
  • Confirm adherence to legislation and safe work procedures.
  • Participate in lifting plans, risk assessments, and safe work procedure briefings.
  • Verify the correct use of PPE and tag lines for personnel during lifting operations.
  • Interpret load charts to ensure lifts are within the Safe Working Load (SWL).
  • Perform pre-lift inspections of cranes, lifting gear, and accessories.
  • Ensure proper rigging of loads and communication setup for safe operations.
  • Supervise the cordoning off of the lifting area with clear signage and barricades.
  • Report and rectify any abnormalities or defects in equipment.
  • Apply preventive measures to control hazards and accidents.

CE 2: Carry Out Supervision of Safe Lifting Operations

  • Implement safety practices and hazard controls on-site.
  • Identify and manage hazards during lifting operations.
  • Coordinate and supervise crane lifting operations safely and in accordance with the lifting plan.
  • Respond appropriately to lifting-related accidents and emergencies.

CE 3: Supervise Reinstatement of Safe Lifting Operations

  • Supervise the dismantling and restoration of rigging equipment.
  • Ensure good housekeeping of equipment and work areas.
  • Perform post-operation checks on cranes, lifting gear, and communication equipment.
  • Investigate accidents and analyze lifting-related incidents.

Mode of Assessment

  • Written Assessment (WA):

    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Format: 40 multiple-choice questions (MCQs)
    • Passing Score: 65%
  • Practical Performance (PP):

    • Duration: 1 hour
    • Grading: Competent/Not Yet Competent basis

This course prepares you to supervise lifting operations confidently, ensuring safety on-site and the ability to handle any lifting-related emergencies or issues.
