Course Overview

The Perform Rigger and Signalman Tasks Course equips you with the essential knowledge and practical skills to safely prepare and secure loads for lifting operations. You’ll learn how to use clear and accurate signals to guide crane operators in maneuvering loads to their destinations safely and efficiently.

This course is ideal for both aspiring and experienced individuals who are responsible for performing Rigger and Signalman tasks in the workplace.


Entry Requirements

To enroll, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Have a basic understanding of the relevant work sector.
  • Be able to:
    • Listen and speak English at a level equivalent to Employability Skills (ES) level 2.
    • Read and write English at the same proficiency level.
    • Work with numbers at a similar proficiency level.
  • Be medically fit to carry out these tasks.

What You’ll Learn

This course covers three key areas to ensure you’re fully prepared for your role:

1. Preparing for Rigger and Signalman Tasks

  • Participate in risk assessments and lifting plan briefings.
  • Identify risks and hazards related to lifting operations.
  • Calculate load weight and determine the center of gravity for regular and irregular loads.
  • Conduct pre-lift inspections of cranes, lifting gear, and accessories.
  • Select and inspect rigging equipment, lifting gear, and communication tools.
  • Set up and test communication equipment for safe lifting operations.
  • Maintain good housekeeping of equipment and report any defects or abnormalities.

2. Performing Rigger and Signalman Tasks

  • Follow safety practices and identify potential hazards during lifting operations.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and taglines while performing tasks.
  • Select the right slinging methods, rigging equipment, and lifting gears.
  • Apply proper rigging techniques and ensure the load is securely rigged.
  • Use the 3-step lifting and lowering method for safe load handling.
  • Guide crane operators using standard hand and voice signals.
  • Check for blind spots and ensure adequate clearance for the load's swing path.

3. Restoring the Work Area After Lifting Tasks

  • Dismantle and properly store rigging equipment and accessories.
  • Perform housekeeping of the work area and equipment.
  • Conduct post-operation checks on communication tools, cranes, and lifting gear.
  • Report any damage or defects following standard procedures.

Assessments

To successfully complete the course, you will need to pass:

  • Written Assessment:
    • Duration: 1 hour
    • Format: 40 multiple-choice questions (MCQs)
    • Passing Score: 60%
  • Practical Assessment:
    • Duration: 0.5 hours
    • Grading: Based on a Competent/Not Yet Competent evaluation.
